Yid'l mit'n Fid'l

See the YouTube video of my performance of "Yid'l Mit'n Fid'l" (Yiddle with his Fiddle).

This video was taken at my performance at the Limmud Conference in Johannesburg, where I performed songs from the album "A Bis'l Libe", interspersed with stories about my great-grandmothers.

This video includes subtitles so you can follow along. On the violin is Waldo Alexander and piano, Denzil Weale. The music was arranged by Ann Hamlin.

A bit more about the song:

The music was written by Abraham Ellstein (1907-1963) and the lyrics by Itzik Manger (1901 – 1969), who proclaimed himself the “master tailor” of the written word. Manger was a folk poet and playwright and wrote “Yid’l with a Fiddle” as one of his rare musical contributions for the film of the same name. The film is said to be the last Yiddish film made in Poland before World War II. It follows bass player Aryeh and his violin playing daughter, who dresses as a boy called Yid’l – because her father says it will be safer for her that way as they go from town to town playing at weddings to make ends meet. I highly recommend watching the film, which is available on Youtube: https://youtu.be/Zz8Q_Zxj_jU

Happy viewing!
